چکیده

The speed of tsunami waves is typically calculated using the shallow-water 3 approximation over a rigid-body Earth. Recent comparisons of tsunami arrival 4 times from the March 11, 2011 tsunami suggest, however, that the standard for-5 mulation has errors around the one percent level, and it has been suggested that 6 the elasticity of the Earth can explain the discrepancy. While previous work has 7 indeed shown that such elastic deformation can modify tsunami speeds, the ef-8 fect has been neglected partly due to the difficulty in understanding how large 9 this elastic effect is. Here, we remedy this by providing a new derivation and 10 expression for how to incorporate the first-order effect that solid Earth elastic-11 ity and ocean water compressibility has on tsunami speeds. This result is shown 12 to agree approximately with previous theory, and helps to explain observed tim-13 ing discrepancies from the March 11, 2011 tsunami. The dispersive elastic cor-14 rection and the non-dispersive compressibility correction together may account 15 for the majority of the observed discrepancy.

Estimating an appropriate plastic concrete mixing design for cutoff walls to control leakage under the earth dam.

Making use of concrete materials in cut-off walls, because of their low permeability and standing high Hydraulic Gradient caused by underground drainage, has attracted great amount of attention. Using ordinary concrete with high elasticity modulus, compared to other materials may accompany with problems including brittleness of cutoffs due to dynamic stresses. To solve this problem, adding a ce...

Investigating the Effect of Zeolite on the Coefficients of Soil Moisture Curve Models in Two Sandy and Loamy Texture

One of the important elements in mechanized irrigation is to know the relation between suction force (matric force) and soil moisture, which is referred to as moisture curve. The shape and coefficients of this curve are influenced by the texture and structure of the soil and can change with soil structure modification.  The most important goals of this study were to evaluate the effect of using...

Estimating the Elasticity of Electricity Demand in Iran: A Sectoral-Province Approach

E nergy is one of the main and essential factors in economic growth. Electricity as one of the most important resources of energy supply for economic sectors on one hand, and as an index of welfare, on the other hand, is one of the economic development benchmarks. The growth of GDP will increase the demand for energy resources, including electricity. Hence, policymakers should pay at...
